Notre compatriote Michel Sidibé, ancien ministre malien de la Santé, est nommé Envoyé Spécial de l’Union Africaine pour la création de l’Agence Africaine du Médicament. Il a lui-même donnée l’information à travers un tweet, ce 1er avril 2021.

Donnant la mesure du défi qui l’attend, Michel Sidibé estime que le Covid-19 a démontré que l’Agence Africaine du Médicament est « vitale pour l’autonomie de l’Afrique » dans la réponse aux pandémies.
Le traité de création de l’Agence africaine du médicament (AMA) a été adopté le 11 février 2019, en marge de la 32e session ordinaire de l’Assemblée de l’Union africaine. Mais l’AMA n’est toujours pas créée. Pour que l’agence puisse voir le jour, au moins 15 des 55 pays de l’UA doivent ratifier le Traité de création. A ce jour, 18 pays ont signé le traité. Cependant, il a été ratifié seulement par huit pays dont le Mali qui a été le deuxième pays à l’avoir fait après le Rwanda.
Avec son expérience décennale (2008 – 2019) à la tête du Programme commun des Nations Unies sur le VIH/sida (ONUSIDA), le Malien Michel Sidibé aura la lourde tâche d’amener les Etats africains à la ratification, puis à la création de l’Agence africaine du médicament. Une agence dont la mission principale est d’améliorer l’accès à des produits médicaux de qualité, sans risque pour le continent.

Scandal and resignation
Sidibé offered his resignation from his post as head of UNAIDS following an expert report[1] on sexual harassment in the agency that criticized his “defective leadership.” Initially, when allegations surfaced in mid-2018, Sidibé refused to quit.[2] In response to heightened scrutiny and reports of his gross mismanagement, however, Sidibé informed the agency’s board on 13 December 2018 that he would leave his post in June, 2019.[3]

🙂 A panel of independent experts released a report on 13 December 2018 saying Sidibé was overseeing a “patriarchal” workplace and promoting a “cult of personality” centred on him as the all-powerful chief. The experts further said the situation could not be changed unless Sidibé, a native of Mali who has headed the UN agency for nine years, resigned.[3] 🙂

Mr. Sidibe might make more expedient radification if he also assess mass buying of most used plus essential pharmaceutical in Africa plus thereafter solicit bids for capable products to fulfill those needs at affordable price . Despite massive corruption ongoing in Africa in purchase of essential drugs from foreign makers with mass buying agenda he may be able to satisfy pharmaceutical companies plus African governments thereof making more African nations willing to ratify medical agency due to agency mass purchasing ability acquiring essential drugs at lower price .
Another function he should keep eye on are quality essential drugs we may produce at low cost. Thereof encouraging Africans of wealth to invest more in African essential drugs production.
In United States reports have it that Covid 19 originated with bats plus thereafter make move to humans but it is not acknowledged how virus transmit from bats to humans.
It is reported in United States that Covid 19 vaccine is effective for six months as oppose to three months they were originally believed to be effective.
