NEW GLASGOW The wheels are in motion for the new P 9 school announced earlier this year for New Glasgow.

The school will replace the Temperance Street and Acadia Street elementary schools as well as the New Glasgow Junior High School.

Jamie Stevens, Chignecto Central Regional School Board member for New Glasgow, said after the provincial government changed in June the board wrote a letter to the new education minister Marilyn More inquiring about the status of the school project.

“As far as they’re concerned everything is set to go ahead as planned far nothing’s changed.”

The next step is a formal school review process that looks at each of the schools to be closed.

“This has to be done, even though the community came to us.”

The first part of that review process is done internally by the board which delivers a report to the school review committee. The committee then studies the report and responds to the board.

“This way the information is provided first so they can come up with a response.”

Members of the school advisory council usually make up the review committee, he noted.

The next step sees the board review the response it has received from the review committee.

Following that, the board turns to site selection with a team formed for that purpose. The board usually requires three site options be submitted.

For now there are no official sites picked for the new school but Stevens said there is one spot that makes sense.

“The logical site is the field off the existing New Glasgow Junior High School. cheap nfl jerseys They could build there and then tear down the existing school.”

Stevens said he’s had good feedback on the project, wherever the new school is constructed on the east side of New Glasgow.

“People have been asking when it’s going to happen. Everybody wants it to happen sooner rather than later, as do I. It’s a wonderful thing for the students and the town of New Glasgow. Schools are an important part of the community.”
